What is eHymns.org?
eHymns.org is a resource comprised entirely of hymns that are either public domain or are free for use in worshipping the one, true God and His Son, Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Bible calls us to pursue this worship both in spirit and in truth.
Who is it for and how should it be used?
This site is for all people who range from being remotely curious about praising God to the most avid singer who spends every possible moment singing praise!
It should be used only in worship of Almighty God who sent His Son, Christ Jesus, down on this earth to rescue sinful, fallen man from the clutches of sin, world and Satan. Who loves us enough to help us on the way to Heaven, which otherwise would be impossible for us to attain.
Where do the hymns come from?
I have a large library of old hymnals that I arrange out of and contained in that library is a good supply of male quartet hymnals out of which I copy the hymns. These hymns are all, to the best of my knowledge, in the public domain. If you see any that are not, please let me know and I will remove them from the site.
I also have taken a number of poems that have been written and set them to music; these hymns, as well as some that I have permission to use on this site, have copyrights on them but are only for the protection of those who labored to produce them.
Why is hymn-worship important?
Secular study tells us that memorization is improved with good music. Sara B. Kirkweg from the Department Of Psychology at Missouri Western State University in her article "THE EFFECTS OF MUSIC ON MEMORY" discusses those benefits.
St. Matthew 26:30 reads, "And when they [Jesus and His disciples] had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives." When Jesus Christ took the time to sing with His disciples, He was just about to go to the cross to die so all mankind could enjoy a relationship with God that He Himself enjoyed. The fact that Christ took the time to do this at such a critical time in His ministry reveals how much the Lord values this worship activity.
Perhaps the most compelling reason to sing, though, is found in the Scripture where Ephesians 5:19 encourages us to speak to each other "... in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;" while Colossians 3:16 instructs us to "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
