Born: July 1, 1854, Baillieston, Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland.

Died: November 24, 1931, Park Ridge, Illinois.

Buried: Town of Maine Cemetery.

When McPhail directed the choir at the First Methodist Church in Canton, Ohio, he became a personal friend of American president William McKinley, who attended there.
