Tho' dark the night appears
My shield is my Lord's presence.
I'll not then evil fear,
For through His blest assurance
He causes dreaded, fearful night
To shine in glory bright.
Drive out the foe and strife,
O dearest Saviour, ever,
If faults be found in me,
In mercy keep me ever;
My erring steps do Thou erase
With patience and Thy grace.
As I lay here this night
In calm repose while sleeping,
Watch o'er me 'till dawn's light,
Lord, Thou my soul art keeping;
May Thy almighty strength and pow'r
Uphold my weakest hour.
Yea, sleep in calm repose,
For past the grave is heaven.
When Thou wilt call, I'll go;
My life to death is given.
This final foe will surely send
