Why grievest, my soul, must thou suffer great pain?
Trust in your dear Jesus, He'll strengthen again.
Endure, and be and be still,
Believing it is thy dear Saviour's good will.

Is thy lot to suffer in sickness and pain?
Let nothing deceive you to murmur in pain.
Endure, and be and be still,

Have thy friends forsaken and turned against thee?
Depend upon Jesus, a true friend is He.

Must thou bear reproach and derision of men?
Consider what God in His Word saieth then:

Though shadows of death should encompass thee here,
The sure hand of God is thy shelter from fear.
