Born: November 24, 1800, Beverly, Massachusetts.

Died: August 12, 1885, Salem, Massachusetts.

Buried: Broad Street Cemetery, Salem, Massachusetts.

Oliver attended the Boston Latin School, Phillips Andover Academy, Harvard University, and Dartmouth (graduating in 1818). He was a church organist for 36 years, and taught school for 24. He also served as mayor of Salem and Lawrence, Massachusetts, Adjutant General of Massachusetts, and as Massachusetts State Treasurer (1861-1865). He received an honorary music degree from Harvard in 1862, and from Dartmouth in 1883. His works include:

* Original Hymn Tunes, 1875
