Stay Thou with me, faithful Friend,
Christ, the hope I cherish!
Now the day has reached its end,
And the sun has vanished.
Let Thy grace, O Lord, anew
My dark path be lighting,
And with flames of love so true
Me with Thee uniting.
Let me ever, blessed Light,
In my heart enfold Thee,
And forever day and night
In Thy love behold Thee!
Darkness reigneth far and near;
Yet in Thy blest nearness,
I am free from pain and fear,
Seeing all in clearness.
Lord, anoint us with the oil
Of sincere devotion!
Fill our spirit, life and soul
With its animation!
That in brightest, purest light
Our lamps may be burning,
That we may in darkest night
All things be discerning.
Then we'll enter, Lord with Thee
Into joys unending,
Where no power us from Thee
Ever can be rending,
With the holy angels there
We shall be proclaiming
Thy great might, Thy love so fair,
