George Michael Mangold was born on December 25, 1822 in Alsace Lorraine, France and died on November 18, 1894 in Fairbury, Illinois.

He arrived in New York on October 21, 1886. He was married to Magdalene Blanc and had at least seven children. He wrote several hymns while in prison for his faith in Baden, Germany, one of which was the beloved hymn, Now And Then.
